Manx Shearwaters

We’re delighted to see Manx Shearwaters off the coast of Torbay.

Apart from when breeding, the Manx Shearwater is an entirely marine bird. They have specially adapted vision, with a thin, wide, horizontal, sensitive region of their retina adapted for extreme vision in a line in front of their bill. I suspect that the detection of fish as they skim close to the surface of the sea is its main evolutionary advantage.

I try to imagine their world but they sense the world completely differently from us. What incredible worlds they inhabit.
