Nest building
My favourite Pied Flycatcher has been successful in defending his chosen nest box and attracting a female. Well done, my young chap.
His partner is busy building a fabulous grass nest within the man-made box which approximates a natural hole in an old tree. The sort of tree which will take another 100 years to grow.

Putting up a few nest boxes is the least we can do since we’ve chopped down over 95% of our natural forest. They love the remaining old oak forests of the west, where epiphytes grow and rainfall is high. This female has made it back from Africa for our summer. Let’s hope she lays lots of eggs.
