St George’s Mushrooms
Last week I said we should be getting St George’s Mushrooms soon. This week, they arrived. By the side of the wide path, hidden in long grass and Nettles, and on the verge of the woodland, there they were: small and medium-sized mushrooms with white stems and gills and off-white caps. They’re distinctive because they fruit at this time of year and nothing else has their distinctive ‘mealy’ smell.

I’m always interested in the date I find them, as they need rain followed by fine weather. They’re as reliable in fruiting as the British weather is at arriving.
In 2023 I celebrated St George’s Day with an omelette.
Today we’re having delicious cold pork, salad and warm mushrooms cooked in a mixture of olive oil and butter. Their distinctive smell disappears during cooking.

Delicious.
Have you found them and eaten them?
