Finally, a Little Owl
It’s been a dream of mine to see a Little Owl again, ever since I looked after a juvenile one when I was a child.
My friend Michael had one which would sit on my index finger and look at me as we took it into his kitchen to attempt to feed it worms or liver and bonemeal. I’ve tried numerous times to see one again, all leading to frustration and failure.
I was working in London for half a day recently and changed from business suit to full camouflage gear in the office toilets before heading for The Regent’s Park. There, I bumped into a young man named Jack looking into a ditch with binoculars. It seemed he was looking for a Water Rail. In our conversation he mentioned the Little Owls he said lived in the park. Naturally I asked for directions and he was kind enough to show me the trees they normally appear in.
Then he pointed out where one was sitting.

Haven’t they got amazing eyes?
