It’s Goosanders all the way

I’m having a trip to Stover Country Park in cold weather when I’m delighted to see there are Goosanders on the lake. All I need to get a good photograph of them in this bright light is to get close to them. Unfortunately, they’re not a species which appreciates humans. I lie down by the water, I climb down the bank a little, I stay very still, I move ahead of them and let other photographers worry them towards me, but none of these field-skills get me close enough.

I want to be so close I can really see their features and understand them. I particularly want a decent shot of a male, as they are spectacular.

I wander off for a while and when I come back they have disappeared. I suspect they’ve made their way up the Stover Canal. I’m sure they’ll be coming back this way into the lake eventually, so I get intimate with a large bush and hide at water level just after the bridge they have to swim under to get back to the lake, It’s an ideal spot. Time passes.

One sails into view:
