Osprey photobombed by a Peregrine

We were on a trip up and down the River Dart in South Devon with Mike Langman in search of migrating Ospreys. We found two. Here’s a juvenile in beautiful light:

It had a headless fish which it carried around, back and forth across the river. Maybe it was already full and wanted to keep a little something for later.

As we watched, a juvenile Peregrine Falcon came shooting across the river towards it.

It had a blue ring, which was placed on it this year by a local ringer. It’s also meant to have a metal ring on the other leg, but that was dropped and lost when it was being ringed.

The Osprey had to take rather hurried avoiding action as the Peregrine Flacon swept in behind it.

It was such an epic experience to see the two of them together.
