What a difference a lens makes

Forty years ago I kept detailed nature notebooks. I wrote down everything I saw and identified with enthusiasm, including the smallest of fungi. Here’s my entry from November 1976:

I love my pencil crayon drawing.

I was thrilled to find it again:

And then again in 2016:

And now, finally I have a compact camera with a macro facility, so here it is in all its close-up glory:

The closer you get, the more there is to see.

I think I’ll get my microscope out next.
