Chocolate Headed Freshwater Gull

I remember reading as a small child that Black Headed Gulls don’t have black heads; they’re chocolate brown, and only that colour for the breeding season.

I also remember reading that Black Headed Gulls aren’t ‘seagulls’ because they live inland as well and nest near fresh water.

Here’s a juvenile on a local lake:
