Really great item, I was watching a pair in the Clyde estuary yesterday as they prolong their 2 year holiday in Scotland ..will they breed though?

Hi David
I live by the Thames estuary in an apartment with a balcony and the past few years I have had wagtails feed on my balcony, they also walk in the flat to rest sometimes. I have pictures and videos.

Very well said! Meanwhile, we’ve been watching our hedgehogs thoughout the summer months and fascinating creatures they are too! In addition to our visitors, my son has them visiting his garden, my daughter has them visiting hers, my sister has them visiting…so there are certainly plenty of hedgehogs where I live!

  It’s great to know that Hedgehogs are thriving locally. Over the UK they’re doing really badly, as more gardens get concreted-over for cars, more pesticides get used and so many hedges have been ripped up.
  Let’s hope more people get joy from them and want them to thrive.

Hi David, I read this very interesting blog last year and wondered if the house martins returned in 2022 and 2023. I am from Huntly Swift Group and involved in swallow and martin conservation in the northeast of Scotland.

Lovely! I also like the flowers of the water lilies that can be seen in the summer on some lochs in the West Mainland of Shetland. They were just coming into flower when I was there in June this year

Im not going to lie, im on greta’s side with all of this stuff. People really do need to wake up and realise, shes just a young girl who was trying to make the world a better place, but everyone took it the wrong way. And i think men only hated her because shes autistic, I think shes really brave. And its not just us kids who are ruining the world, its everyone. Young, Mid-aged and Old. The smoking, the vaping, the plastic, the DRIVING. kids cant drive, so how is that our fault?

  “The Museum’s specimen of Archaeopteryx lithographica originates from the latest Jurassic Solnhofen Limestone in Bavaria, Germany. It was among more than 1,900 Solnhofen fossils bought from Dr Karl Haberlein in 1862 for £700.”

Officially there are 11 examples of Archeaopteryx, what are all the other samples including the one on the very top? Are they just similar or something else?

  I think to know the reason for confusion, I was referring to the upper most picture, showing – so far as I think to know now a Pterodactylus kochi – and you have been referring to the drawing of the “London example” of Archaeopteryx.

I’m happy to see other human beings recognizing these birds for their beauty just as you would a bluebird or cardinal. So many people think they are pests and that really bothers my soul. They are birds, our friends and we need to protect them.

David, I was lucky to see the gannets nesting on the cliffs near Noup Head in 2023. I did a day tour with Westrack Tours and we went out to the cliffs. It was wonderful looking down to see all the birds. I also enjoyed seeing groups of puffins at Castle o’ Burrian. Your photos of the gannets are great. Jenny from Nowra, New South Wales.

Hi there

I once had a caravan in Kintyre , near where a barn swallow nested (2019 I think) in a coastal cave (along with feral pigeon/rock dove).

It was lovely to see both birds nesting in the primordial way. Is a natural swallow nest as rare as a house martin and if so who would be interested in my observation? I don’t have any photos but I could help anyone interested enough find the cave that is likely still used

I can’t fault your analysis. I do have and practice a ‘religion’ but perhaps the most important aspect for me is that there is no ‘evangelism’ – I found it – it didn’t find me or come looking. One of my dearest friends died a few years ago. She was a woman of science, of rationalism and I held her knowledge and opinions in high regard. Towards the end of her life she said to me “I don’t believe in anything – I wish I did, but I don’t. “ she had a tremendous send off with a humanist styled funeral and burin a natural woodland. I think that Rites of Passage are the key feat for humans to acknowledge rather than any specific belief. and whilst we’re on the subject of beliefs – gender ideology is a belief yes (a cult I’d say) but I’m furious that the law says that the immutability of sex is also a belief … not a fact… outrageous.

The ‘mystery’ is: why should a Sacred Ibis be on the document when it wasn’t recognised as a British bird? The answer is in the fact that the online paper is a reprint issued by Prof. Alfred Newton in 1880, who was the editor of the ornithological journal ‘Ibis’ from 1865 to 1870. The picture of the Sacred Ibis is the ‘logo’ of the ‘Ibis’ at that time, and the page includes Newton’s name and the date 1880.
