I photographed one on the Sussex shore near Goring a few years back, which had remained on the same small patch for several days. He was by a fairly busy footpath and only moved out of the way when a cyclist came by, oblivious to its presence.

Thanks for being so respectful to them! once a couple of years ago we had a long-eared owl flying into the city and staying in a really big park for some time during winter (lots of bird feeders used as a hunting ground, and mice), and some very hungry photographers were not only bothering the owl taking their shots being extremely close but sometimes threw snowballs at it to get the bird’s reaction. Oooof was I angry!
And next year a Pygmy owl flew in and photographers ‘wisened up’ and brought mice, planting them in ‘nice spots’ to get shots of a bird in a hunting mode. There were heated debates online and offline as you can imagine, but after that incident with Long-eared owl I stopped going out to see rare winter owls fly-ins.
Anyway, that has nothing to do with your beautiful pictures and an amazing sighting overall!! I have never seen a snow bunting and it look so curious in your pictures, such a wholesome wee little fella! And your writing is great as always!

Oh my goodness! How awful! I always thought that as a human race we should progress…not regress!

You only have to look at some of the road names to realise that the estate was huge compared to today. For instance, ‘Deer Park Road’ ( where my grandparents lived) and ‘Decoy’ ( I taught at the school there) give clues.
And you’ve only taken one small piece of history! Newton Abbot is steeped in history but most people walk around, blinkered…and then they say that the town is a dump! (Only yesterday, someone commented exactly that!) Yet, the history of the town is amazing! When I was teaching, I did a number of projects on Newton Abbot, as I believe that you should know your own town! We made trips to the museum as well as to Forde House. If you are in the town, history is there right at your fingertips..as you’ve no doubt noticed when you’ve been sketching!

In pediatrics, some of the most complex issues we have to deal with involve infants born with ambiguous genitalia. These are newborns with external genitals that are neither clearly male nor clearly female. Most pediatric hospitals have multidisciplinary teams to help parents make the decisions that need to be made. It is not simple. Should we try and make the genitals match the chromosomal sex or should we go along with the surgeons who often want to go with procedures that will have the most realistic and functional results? Should we assign gender in infancy or wait until a child is old enough to express a preference? One thing we have learned is that there is no one size fits all solution. Regardless of the chromosomal sex or how a child is raised, some children express a strong gender preference by school age that is not predictable on the basis of chromosomes nor on the basis of gender assigned at birth and in which the child has been reared. Many pediatric hospitals wait until a child can express this preference before making final decisions about gender assignment.
Life can be complicated. The simplest answers are not necessarily the correct ones.

This is the church where, in 1949, my mum and dad were married! So it holds a special place in my heart. Obviously they have now passed on and so we held two funerals there, as well. As a child, I frequently visited the church but I especially enjoyed the Christmas crib, which was delightful. Lovely to see it in your sketches!

It’s that favourite modern twist… ‘impact not intent’ – so no matter that you never intend insult or hurt, if they feel it, then you have wronged. As my wise old West Indian father in law used to say “if someone wants to be offended, they will be”.
