Fishing

I love chugging out of Brixham on board the Kelly’s Hero. Brixham is still an active port, and it’s a pleasure to see the occasional trawler and smaller fishing boats out in Lyme Bay. Today there’s still an early haze and even the hint of a rapidly disappearing sea mist as we head out.

There is natural fishing talent here, too, with Razorbills on the cliffs and small rocky islands. Here’s what I lovingly refer to as an ‘Emo Puffin’ flying past us.

There are also Common Guillemots in fine form as they hurtle towards their colonies. They are more chocolate brown than black and have a distinctive curved line behind the eye. In some individuals this is picked out by a fine line of white feathers and they are referred to as ‘bridled’.
