I met a German tourist at the Castle o’ Burrian on Westray in Orkney. He’d just been to see the Puffins. His English wasn’t very good, he told me, in perfect English. He needn’t have felt apologetic, given the state of my German. He smiled at me and said, “Puffins are good for the soul.” They truly are.
Experiencing the natural world is something which can be very good for your state of mind. It’s also good for mild anxiety and depression. You don’t have to wait until you’re anxious or depressed though. I thought I’d make a small series of one-minute one-shot films of Puffins. Why? Because Puffins are good for the soul.
In this first Episode, a pair of Puffins are digging their burrow. It features a local celebrity Puffin, Alfred Schnabel the amazing digging Puffin.
The Puffins are nervous because a Great Skua keeps patrolling the cliffs and occasionally hunts and kills one. We used a tiny remote control camera and didn’t disturb them. Respect the Puffins.
Amazingly, Puffins are at risk of extinction. Marine pollution, over-fishing and global heating leading to climate disruption are all taking their toll.
Thanks for watching. Please do leave a comment and let me know what you thought. If you’d like to see the upcoming videos in the series then please subscribe to my YouTube channel, Head for Nature. Thanks!
