Majestic Fulmar

Fulmars historically bred on the isolated island of St. Kilda. They spread into northern Scotland in the 19th century, and to the rest of the United Kingdom by 1930. On St Kilda Fulmars were ‘harvested’ for oil, feathers and meat and they became central to the island’s economy. James Fisher, author of The Fulmar (1952) calculated that every person on St Kilda consumed over 100 Fulmars each year.

I’m glad we don’t do that on Westray. They are majestic.
