Westside Wheatears

I’ve taken to walking the Westside of Westray. Yes, I’ve been taking a Walk on the Westside. The glorious weather has meant stunning views all along the coast. If you want to see what it’s like, do check out my blog about walking the entire coast of Westray, starting here, on the Westside:

The Wheaters have fledged recently, so I decide I’m going to lie on the springy turf and see if they will come past me. The chicks are gorgeous, but I’d like a decent photograph of one of the adults first. It’s always a good sign if a bird is willing to fly towards you, at least when it’s not attacking you, as it means it’s comfortable in your presence.

This Wheater was.

What a thrill to be so close to a wild bird out here, miles from the nearest farm, and to be surrounded by its family, foraging for food. It’s been an unforgettable afternoon.
