Can you imagine the Pennines without the Pennine Finch?
Twite are on the verge of extirpation in England. Their last stand is in the ‘Twite Triangle’ between Manchester, Leeds and Halifax.
All of life on Earth is related, with a common living heritage stretching back three and a half billion years. Every single being alive is a survivor of an unbroken genetic lineage going back for generation after generation. This Twite’s mother’s mother’s mother’s… and so on for 320 million years was the same small lizard-like animal as your mother’s mother’s mother’s… and so on.
That genetic heritage, that richness of life on Earth, that resplendent, magnificent beauty, is being despoiled and wasted forever in the blink of an eye in evolutionary time.
How could we be so cavalier with our shared inherited wealth?
