The shortest scheduled flight in the world is between Westray and Papa Westray (and, of course, the other way round). It’s in the Guinness Book of World Records. My kind friends have booked for us to go on the flight with them. It’s a huge thing for me as I’ve never been on the flight and certainly never been in such a small plane – it’s an eight seater. It’s quite a scramble to get in onto the leather seats and we sit beaming as the pilot gives us the safety briefing. “Have you all been on a plane before? Okay.”
Just after we take off I can hear the flaps go down for landing; the flight takes two minutes. I can see skerries below and beautiful white shell-sand beaches. The experience is thrilling.
For the return journey I can hear the plane arriving and run outside the tiny waiting room to see it land and turn ready for the return journey.
