A lover’s tiff

Hawfinches are quarrelsome bullies. They’re bigger than the other birds which frequent bird feeders and they don’t mind throwing their weight around.

This gorgeous pair are having a beak-to-beak argument, grabbing each other and taking part in an enthusiastic tug-of-war as they flutter to maintain a grip on their branch. The male is the brightly coloured bird on the right, the female is the more subtly coloured one on the left.
