I’m never that keen on using Latin or Greek when good-old Anglo Saxon words will do fine. Orthodontics means ‘ortho‘ – straightening, and ‘dontics‘ – teeth. This building is the town’s teeth-straighteners.
Greek and Latin-origin words tend to make the meaning unclear to many people. I think about that lack of clarity every time I pass a defibrillator and wonder what percentage of the population know it’s a heart-restarter.
I’ve been enjoying sketching postcards of my home town of Newton Abbot in Devon. Here’s Devon Square Orthodontics, a cheerful pink Victorian building overlooking St Paul’s Church.
