Dark-bellied Brent Geese

Brent Geese are small Geese, only just bigger than a large duck. On the River Exe we have the dark-bellied Brent Geese which come from Russia and Siberia to spend the winter in a less inhospitable climate. They merge into large flocks feeding mainly on eel grass.

They’re an impressive sight as they rise above the mud and power past our Stuart Lines cruise boat.

We get some wonderful views as they fly past in good light. The rich red-brown mud, the rippling blue water and their subtle black plumage make a harmonious combination.
