Refusing to change tense

I was searching for a Yellow-Browed Warbler in a local copse when I came across this bunch of flowers tied to a trunk. The message is poignant, but what struck me most was the crossed out ‘w’. It’s refusing to write ‘were’ and substituting ‘are’ which got me. I thought about it all day.
