Merlin at Greylake
When I hear that there’s been a Merlin at RSPB Greylake in Somerset I decide I’ve just got to pay it a visit. I’ve only got an afternoon and the weather forecast is finally for clear bright weather, so I’m travelling in hope.
Merlin, Falco columbarius, are the UK’s smallest raptors.
When I arrive I’m told where it normally perches and that it’s already been sitting on the ground in front of the hide. I think I’ve lost my chance.
It’s when I see all the Lapwings take to the air my hopes rise. I scan the ground and, sure enough, there it is!
What a fabulous bird.
