Rock Samphire – Fennel or creosote?

Rock Samphire makes a lovely show of subtle green and brown flowers and foliage on the rocks on parts of the South Devon coast.

What does Rock Samphire taste of? What is that taste? It’s salty, certainly. It’s either fennel… or creosote.

At least I won’t get scurvy now. It was traditionally harvested on the Isle of Wight in May and sent to London in barrels of water. Personally I think there are easier ways of avoiding scurvy.
