  Thanks Sally – I was very pleased with the light and the detail in this one – it really shows their character, as well as the hydrodynamic shape of their facial feathers.

Great portrait! how did you get so close?
They are subtly different from the Pacific horned puffin. I’d love to get some images of them.
I have some close ups of the tufted puffin in my Twitter timeline.

  Thanks so much Henry. I must have been at least 5 metres (15 feet) away from it, as that’s my lens’s closest focussing distance. On Westray, many of the Puffins are habituated to human presence and will approach people because they are curious. That means you can sit still on soft grass and enjoy their antics as they fly in to roost every evening in the summer.
  I’d love to see the other Puffin species in the wild.
