Goldfinch

There’s a beautiful high-pitched tinkling from the branch above me. It’s a glorious Goldfinch, one of my favourite birds.

I could listen to it for longer than it wants to stay here and my heart soars when it lifts off and flutters away, lost in the sky.

I was surprised to see the coloring of your Goldfinch. The American Goldfinch is bright yellow all over with black wings, and its “song” is a bunch of twittering — certainly not what I would call melodious. They also have bad manners on birdfeeders. There can be throngs of them squabbling for a “seat at the table” and once getting there, just sitting there all day so other “polite” birds like Chickadees or Titmice can’t approach, take a seed, and fly off. But in summer, seeing this spot of gold perching on a flower, especially a blue flower like Chicory or Globe Thistle can be stunning.

Thanks so much Colin - much appreciated. Yes, many small birds are very loud - although I think the Wren should hold the record for decibels per gramme.

Great pictures- thanks! Never heard of Sedge Warblers... A lot of Willow Warblers around here. Never ceases to amaze me how such a small bird can produce so many decibels!

What a beautiful bird! It does not breed here in Switzerland, but it does pass through. I have never seen one - I didn't even know it existed.
