Dolphins in Brixham Harbour
It was Christmas Day 2019 and the Puffin Whisperer and I went for a day trip to Brixham. We spent the morning with the Turnstones at Brixham Breakwater and had a really pleasant time. It was reasonably bright and clear and the people out promenading were all happy and polite.
As we packed up to leave a passer-by saw our cameras and asked, “Did you see the Dolphins in the harbour this morning.” We hadn’t. “They were there at 7 o’ clock”, she said. That seemed unlikely to me. It was still dark then. We thanked her and decided to take a detour to the harbour before driving home for nut roast. And there, still in the harbour, was a pod of Common Dolphins, Delphinus delphis.
I love the reflection of the boats in the harbour here:

One came close and I captured the colours and the swirls as it passed by:

There were six of them in a family group. This shot shows four of them together:
And finally, after two hours of entertainment, it began to get dark. Small crowds had gathered on the harbour-side as word had spread. Suddenly they began to jump from random places around the Harbour. Cries of “Woah!” came from around the Harbour. One jumped across the water from me and I managed to capture it perfectly:
I’m thrilled that I managed to react to it jumping, get it in focus and be in the right place for their exit. It’s a once in a lifetime shot. I’ve just added it to my shop here.
I’m thrilled with how they’ve turned out.
