Atlantic Wave

I love walking the west coast of Westray. On a beautiful day there’s no place like it. I’ve been enjoying getting to know the rocky outcrops called geos (with a harsh ‘g’), the rock formations and the deep, mysterious, echoing caves.

There’s one spot I’ve returned to time and time again this summer. There’s a rock shelf with shallow water where the waves break in perfect curls, like butter off a knife, which has a perilous viewpoint. It’s there I stood, at just the right phase of the tide, when glorious light lit the translucent sea with deep blue and turquoise, as the perfect counterpoint to the white foam.

I got as close as I dared, helped by the grip of my boots on the barnacle-encrusted rocks. I managed to avoid the spray of waves breaking furiously behind me and captured this moment. I love it. The alternating layer of spray patterns with light on dark and dark on light make it work for me. It’s now available framed and unframed in my shop and here on my blog for you to enjoy.

Thanks for sharing this moment with me.
