“The North our home, the sea our friend”
The Coat of Arms of the Orkney Islands Council is displayed in the Orkney Museum. The gold ship on a blue background symbolises the ancient Earldom of Orkney, while the golden lion on the red background is from the Royal Arms of Norway. It’s held by a landowning Orkney man, called an udallerer, and a unicorn. The Latin inscription of Boreas Domus Mare Amicus means The North our home, the sea our friend. How true.
