Fish, eggs and baby birds

The Arctic Skua is one of the most recognisable silhouettes in Orkney, patrolling the shoreline hunting for birds’ eggs, young birds and birds which it can terrorise into dropping their catch of fish so that it can have a fish supper without going fishing itself. Its scientific name? Stercorarius parasiticus.

It’s the highwayman of Orkney’s skies.
