The Toothed Weaver

The most common spider at Einar is the Toothed Weaver, Textrix denticulata. They are tiny, only about 7mm long. Many of them live in the piles of old slate from the renovation of the house. It’s a funnel-web spider.

They have a beautiful horseshoe-shaped cream-coloured marking on the front of their abdomen.

For I moment I think I’m getting better at this macro photography business but I still need to improve. The best photographs of spiders seem to be taken in studios with fancy lights and control of the temperature. I’d rather be outdoors enjoying myself in nature.

Here’s a photograph I took in the same place last year with a similar-looking spider. It’s got much more presence, scale and drama, I think.

Now I need to unlearn everything I’ve learnt recently about macro photography and go back to trusting my instincts and simply telling stories.
