Lesser Spotted in name and nature

Lesser Spotted Woodpecker - The Hall of Einar - photograph (c) David Bailey (not the)

There’s a Lesser Spotted Woodpecker in my local woods. They’re tiny and now is the best time of year to spot them. As soon as the leaves are out they will be hidden from view by a single leaf. This female has been entertaining crowds of photographers. Wearing camouflage and using a long lens mean I haven’t disturbed the happy couple. I hope other photographers will be as careful, so we will be rewarded by the pitter-patter of tiny woodpeckers later in the year.
