Nesting Coot

The scientific name of the Eurasian Coot is Fulica atra. There are currently ten species of Coot worldwide; there were eleven species, but we made the Mascarene Coot extinct around 1700. Apart from the American Coot, all the others live in South America, so it’s likely that our Eurasian Coot came from there and evolved here.

Much respect to those pioneer immigrant Coots.
