The Blue Tit’s scientific name is Cyanistes caeruleus. Cyanistes is from the Ancient Greek World kuanos meaning dark blue, which is the root of the English word cyan. Caeruleus is the diminutive form of caelum, which means heaven or sky, which is where we get the colour caerulean blue, a shade of blue ranging from azure to darker sky blue.

The Blue Tit’s scientific name translates as Blue little blue sky.
