Hatching nuts
Nuthatches don’t actually hatch nuts, they hack them. However, just try saying Nuthacks and you’ll see why Nuthatch is so much easier on the tongue.
Their feet are so endearing.
The steely-blue and apricot of their plumage is unusual for a bird in the UK. This one is quite pale. It has a small beard under its beak and a smudge across its eye, with the sort of smokey eye which used to be called eyeshadow.
It’s a cold morning and I’m out early, so this one is well and truly fluffed up against the cold.
As am I.
