Black Redstarts are lively. More lively than me this morning.

They’re flitting in an elaborate pattern across the scrub in this park in Rome. They’re enjoying playing chase into and then around a tree and then back down in the scrub, feeding on invisible (to me) insects as they go.

I wonder if this one is from this year’s brood as it has a yellow edged beak.
They set off from the branches at an explosive pace. They’re so fast that it’s all I can do to capture them.

Luckily they repeat their pattern, so I position myself with the sun in the best position for a good angle of their flightpath. This is my favourite shot:
