Fish envy

There’s a week in July which I call ‘peak Puffin’. It’s when every burrow is full of a hungry growing Puffling. Adults arrive back with beakfulls of Sandeels. Sometimes they seem to be still wriggling, although it may just be the Puffin turning its head or rearranging its tongue. Or, of course, they may be so fresh they’re still alive.

The rest of the birds in the colony are always interested. Neighbours checking out the foraging success.

We are so much like other animals in our behaviour it amazes me we ever thought that we were somehow different.
