King Alfred’s Cakes

There’s an interesting fungus on this piece of dead wood. I’ve always known it as Cramp Balls, or Daldinia concentrica, but my friend said, “Look, King Alfred’s Cakes!” so I suppose that must be another name for them.

They do look as if they’ve been left in the oven too long.
