Hanging out the washing to dry

If your species is going to have to swim to eat and survive, you would have thought that you would have evolved waterproof wings by now, but no. Cormorants spend a little while fishing and then have to spend an age drying themselves out again. They are constantly having to hang the washing out to dry.
