Coots – forty years ago in my nature notebooks

Forty years ago I made a pencil sketch of a Coot on its nest. I was inspired by seeing an adult with a tiny baby Coot in the reeds in a dried-up pond on Ynys Bŷr, known as Caldy Island, which is just off Tenby in South Wales.

Today I’m in Italy and am astounded by the number of Coots here on the beautiful lakes and lagoons
