Rock rings like tree rings

Orkney used to be a lake. Most of its rocks are from the mud at the bottom of that lake or from the desert sands as it dried out. Every year there was a wet and a dry season and the marks of those seasons are still visible in the rings in these rocks. They are marks of the seasons from 400 million years ago.
