Old and new

St Magnus Cathedral is slowly weathering away. Beautiful new carvings have been inserted to replace some of the most weathered parts. Their very newness produces a bizarre juxtaposition of new with old which makes we think that I prefer the gently ageing Cathedral as I know it now. Perhaps I wouldn’t have liked it as much when it was younger, brasher and bolder. We all are weathered by time’s relentless progress. We can only hope it improves us too.
