Coal black

When did you last see a piece of coal? How many people under the age of 30 have ever seen a piece?

There’s a fungus in the woods which looks as black as a piece of coal.

It’s Russula nigricans, the Blackening Brittlegill. It was originally grey and pure white. Not now. I’ll have to come here again next year to see them in pristine condition.
