The Drumstick Truffleclub

There’s a fungus which is barely visible on the forest floor.

It’s Tolypocladium capitatum, the Drumstick Truffleclub.

It’s a parasitic fungus which grows on a fungus. I love parasitic fungi. There’s the Scarlet Caterpillar Club, Cordyceps militaris, which I’ve found before, which grows on caterpillars and pupae. There’s also the parasitic Bolete, Pseudoboletus parasiticus, which is always a thrill to find:

This Drumstick Truffleclub grows on truffles.

I’m going to come back with a small implement to dig it up and see the whole thing.

In the meantime I’m just going to lie here on the wet ground admiring it.

Because that’s the sensible thing to do.
