English Stonecrop

There’s one of my favourite wild flowers at Start Point. It’s English Stonecrop, Sedum anglicum. Here it is growing on rock which is almost bare, on a wild and windy exposed coast. The flower buds are just about to burst and one single flower has emerged so far on this patch.

I move my phone closer and look at the open flowers. They are so crisp, so beautifully symmetrical and so colourful around the white petals that they are a treat to study.

Sedum is from the same root as sedentary, meaning sitting down. It’s a plant which likes to hug the ground. It’s time for me to sit down and have a rest, too, I think, and just admire the scenery.
