Dawn over Kirkwall Bay

Arriving off the Aberdeen ferry at nearly midnight gives me a quandary. Is it worth paying a small fortune for a few hours in a Kirkwall hotel? Or shall I just sleep in my car?

This is what makes up my mind:

The Bay is lovely a few minutes before dawn. And since I’m already in my clothes all I have to do is lace up my walking boots and I’m off for a walk.

The intensity of the colour rises with the sun.

Then an Oystercatcher flutters across the Peedie Sea.

Magical.
