Nursery Web Spider

I’d love to be wearing shorts in this heat but the likelihood of ticks and the healthy patches of stinging nettles mean I’m sweltering in long trousers. In one patch of nettles is a spider. It looks very distinctive:

A quick search tells me it’s probably a Nursery Web Spider, Pisaura mirabilis. “Habitat: Usually found low vegetation especially nettle beds.” That sounds right.

It’s another reason to wear long trousers.
