Bridled Guillemot

Looking back at my photographs from Westray in 2017 I’m struck by this beautiful Bridled Guillemot. It’s a Guillemot, Uria aalge, but with a white eye ring and line.

The bridled form makes up just one in 400 Guillemots in the south and 1 in 4 in the north of the UK. I’d love to tell you more but the research from 1939 is held behind a paywall and I’d have to buy it to tell you about it. Even then I couldn’t share it in full. Science really hasn’t caught up with the Internet age, has it?
