The Second Ladybird Book of British Birds - The Mallard

The Mallard is a common wild duck. Except for being a little smaller, Mallards look and make an ordinary “quack” like farmyard ducks, although the drakes are more splendidly dressed.

The Mallard lives on big lakes, field ponds or quiet stretches of rivers, and eats frogs, worms, small fish and leaves of water plants

Young Mallards do not like going into water at first and have to be encouraged by their mothers, but as soon as they enter they can swim.
