Sniff my fingers

Grey seals are very distinctive. This one was hauled out at Broughton in Pierowall. They have that famous Roman nose:

I first saw one over forty years ago when on holiday in Tenby. I wrote about it in my nature notebooks:

“Seals with long snouts”, I wrote. I seemed to be impressed that they were all different colours and patterns.

I even sketched one when I was twelve years old and stuck it in my scrapbooks:

It’s definitely got that Roman nose.

This one wasn’t sniffing its fingers though.
