Tangled roots

Grass looks so unremarkable and is so ever-present in Orkney that it takes something special to shock me into considering it from a new perspective.

I’m carting roofing slates in a wheelbarrow when I spot a few leaves poking out between slates. Separating the slates I find an incredibly fine network of grass roots have grown between them.

It would be a work of art if it wasn’t entirely natural. It’s a welcome distraction from hard physical labour.
