Demoiselled if you do

Beautiful Demoiselles are beautiful by name and vicious killers by nature. I see a male clasping a fern, here on the side of the River Dart in Devon, having a brief, seemingly restless flight and then munching on some insect it has found flying nearby.

They are such expert hunters that I don’t even see their prey. Every few seconds they take off and return, with their jaws working overtime. The males are a deep, dark, iridescent blue.

The females are together on another fern frond.

They are green and bronze.

They are deadly.

Damselflies have six legs but are incapable of walking with them. Their legs can help them perch and also have spines to act as scoops to catch their prey.

They are totally absorbing to watch.
