Dunnock – forty years ago in my nature notebooks

Dunnocks are beautiful birds but it’s hard to tell they’re so beautiful because they keep in the shadows, in hedges and under cover, so it’s rare to get a decent sighting of one. Here’s one hiding from me in a hedge:

That’s why they are also known as Hedge Sparrows, which is what I wrote in my nature notebooks forty years ago when I was twelve years old:

Dun means brown and you might be forgiven for thinking that Dunnocks are dull brown birds. Not so. They’re all shades of grey and brown with beautiful patterns:
